Okay today is the day. Today I’m going to actually do it. Run. Yup, going to run. Got my shoes…..and my music….and my other...stuff. Ugh but it’s hot and people I know might see me. I’ll go later. Uh oh, it’s really late and I don’t want to run in the dark. Also I’m really tired. I’ll go tomorrow. Oh I forgot my bus tickets and I’m going to have to walk home. That counts as my run right? Yeah sure. Phew, that’s my run for the week done.
I don’t know about anyone else but this is the general process I go through when I inevitably realize I’ve been sitting on the couch for too long and need to go for a run. I will keep putting it off until the guilt eats away at me and I start to feel like I need to run, or I’m going to get out of shape, get fat, or whatever other things I can imagine will come as consequences for not running. (A topic for another day of blog posting perhaps) With ringette, I’m probably supposed to be running at least three times a week. Do I actually run three times a week? No. Right now I’m lucky to run three times a month.
Now, of course I know that running has many benefits. It increases your endurance, increases bone mass, keeps you sharp and awake (I can actually attest to this, as the occasional time I have run, I’m actually more awake after running than before), strengthens your muscles, helps you sleep better and is actually a really good way to relax. It will improve my ability to play my best in sports, and just generally improve my overall health.
The only problem is finding the time to actually go out running. I’m not waking up early to run before school, I wake up early enough as it is, and after school is often hard . By the end of the day I’m tired, have zero motivation to get out of the house unless I absolutely must, and on top of it all, I probably have to do homework. Weekends? Forget about it. Weekends are my weekends. They are for pre-scheduled obligations-family gatherings, practices, games, Netflix-and catching up on the sleep I’ve missed throughout the week (theoretically anyways). And in the winter? Where am I supposed to run? I don’t have a gym membership, and I’m not running in the snow. All of this seem right?
Honestly, all excuses. Everything I say to myself; I don’t have time, I don’t want to be tired for that game I’m umpiring, I’ve got homework I need to finish, etc., are, more often than not, excuses. I’m just too lazy to get up off the couch and go run.
So recently I’ve decided that I’m going to actually start running. I’ve planned out my days and taken into account what activities I have planned for that day and how much time I have. I fit in runs where I can and stick to my schedule. When I write things down I tend to follow them a lot better than if I just say that I will. So far, it’s working.
Let me know what your thoughts on running are, and if you do run, tell me about it. Do you run on a treadmill or outside? Everyday or once in a while? Do you look forward to your runs or dread the thought of going out again when you're already comfortable inside? If you have a way of sticking to a schedule, or making yourself go run I'd love to know. I really need to start running.
